Young Children’s Play Practices with Digital Tablets

Young Children’s Play Practices with Digital Tablets

The ebook version of this title is Open Access, thanks to Knowledge Unlatched funding, and is freely available to read online. This book presents how young children's current practices when playing with tablets inform digital experiences in Denmark and Japan. Through an interdisciplinary lens and a grounded theory approach, Fróes identifies and maps these practices, which compose the taxonomy of tablet play and proposes a series of theoretical concepts that complement recent theories related to play and digital literacy studies. Tablet devices bring with them not only a multitude of options, but they also help create notions of digital space and environments defining emerging territories in young children's play experiences. Young children play with these devices and have fun indulging in digital worlds, while discovering and problem-solving with a variety of narratives and interfaces encountered on these digital playgrounds. A set of tablet play characteristics, such as multimodal applications (apps) combined with tablets' physical and digital affordances shape children's digital play. The data collected through observations informed some noteworthy aspects, including how children's hands gain and perform an embodied knowledge of digital spaces. This embodied knowledge develops through digital play interactions, defining what is proposed as digital penmanship. Complementary to the penmanship, several symbols and a range of modes of use shape a rich multimodal semiotic vocabulary in children's digital play experiences. These early digital experiences set the rules for the playgrounds and assert digital tablets as twenty-first-century toys, shaping young children's playful literacy.

Liar Detector

Become A Human Lie And Truth Detector Lying is an ingrained instinct. Humans learn to lie by the age of three and just keep on lying into adulthood. On average, people will lie 3 times or more in a ten minute conversation with a stranger or acquaintance. Does this sound unbelievable? Or maybe, you just don’t know how to spot the lies. There are many types of lies in this world: little white lies, big lies, small lies, omissions, exaggerations, and unconscious lies. Everyone lies at some point in their life. However, some people do it more often than others. It can lead to an immense amount of frustration when dealing with habitually dishonest people. It may be a teenager that you suspect isn’t telling the entire truth about their late-night out or a co-worker is constantly bragging about achievements that you doubt they completed. You may have a relative that always denies what they said at that last family gathering or maybe you just want your spouse to tell you what they actually think about your newest sweater. Regardless of the circumstances, there are often many everyday situations that make you want to know the complete truth. But how does one go about finding out if someone is actually lying? Most people can only successfully spot a lie about 50% of the time. Many people also think that only polygraphs can tell when people are lying. But what if you could become a human polygraph? Calm the Crying

Calm the Crying

One of the world’s foremost parenting experts offers a revolutionary guide for translating a crying baby’s urgent messages. Like many new parents, Priscilla Dunstan was at her wit’s end trying to ease the crying of her colicky infant son. Then she made a startling discovery: His sounds varied according to his needs, and she could decipher their meaning by tracking the sound as a physical reflex. Unlike learned languages, Dunstan soon realized, every newborn from birth to three months possesses a natural, reflexive communication system for signaling hunger, tiredness, the need to burp, lower gas, and general discomfort. Thirteen years of research culminated in the Dunstan Baby Language, now made available to all caregivers in Calm the Crying.Helping readers learn to recognize and respond to exactly what their baby needs, Dunstan’s remarkable program covers ten sounds in total that can be identified and used to calm a baby. Brimming with diagrams and photographs, Calm the Crying reduces the frustration of wasted time spent addressing the wrong needs. A baby’s cries are a powerful form of communication—now made even more powerful because the message can be understood loud and clear.

Mind in Motion

Mind in Motion

An eminent psychologist offers a major new theory of human cognition: movement, not language, is the foundation of thoughtWhen we try to think about how we think, we can't help but think of words. Indeed, some have called language the stuff of thought. But pictures are remembered far better than words, and describing faces, scenes, and events defies words. Anytime you take a shortcut or play chess or basketball or rearrange your furniture in your mind, you've done something remarkable: abstract thinking without words. In Mind in Motion, psychologist Barbara Tversky shows that spatial cognition isn't just a peripheral aspect of thought, but its very foundation, enabling us to draw meaning from our bodies and their actions in the world. Our actions in real space get turned into mental actions on thought, often spouting spontaneously from our bodies as gestures. Spatial thinking underlies creating and using maps, assembling furniture, devising football strategies, designing airports, understanding the flow of people, traffic, water, and ideas. Spatial thinking even underlies the structure and meaning of language: why we say we push ideas forward or tear them apart, why we're feeling up or have grown far apart. Like Thinking, Fast and Slow before it, Mind in Motion gives us a new way to think about how--and where--thinking takes place.
